Work/Life Balance is nothing as compared to Job security, ask 1000 of people made redundant by firms. How can you expect an employee to be loyal, when the firm is not. See Rio Tinto regarding 4 Ex.Executive.
I'd like to see all organisations having to publish on their website their work/life balance policy for clear view for potential employees
This is all utter hypocrisy along with fair go slogan of Australia....Wake up to the real world. The people are overworked & underpaid.Every employee speaks truth(Big 4 CA firms inclusive) after the redundancy/retrenchment.
What I hate is so many people equate desk hours to productive work hours. Wake up! Just because you sit at a desk for 10 hours doesn't mean you have been pumping out work - more likely surfing the net!
I agree! Often the most productive work is coming together with a team offsite, and really working on an issue. I'd like to see 3 days of this a week & 2 days working from home.
Australians feel: Employers place pressure on employees to work longer hours and give things up to stay employed. They make you feel like it is a priviledge to have a job.
It's the word balance. It sets it up in your mind that there is a 50 50 spilt between work and life. For some people work life balance could mean 70% work 30% life and they think that is balance.
Work life balance only works when your employer lets you take up the"benefits". It;s all well and good to offer flexible work arrangements. But when yuo're not actually allowed to take them = ALL TALK!
Work usually follows me home and I have to travel a lot outside working hours for business. Employers should to pay their staff extra for taking their time away from their family on business trips outside of working hours.
It's insane that thousands of people travel to cities each day to work when there are opportunities for people to work from their local area or homes. We are very good at talking the talk of work life balance but very poor at walking the walk!
I work for a firm of chartered accountants. Overtime is expected. The extra hours are unpaid nor do I receive time in lieu. Time off for the Dentist or Dr, are deducted from my accrued entitlements. The loyalty you give is not often returned.
Less meetings, less talking would allow more working time during the approximate 9-5 work period thereby eliminating overtime and life balance can truly come into the equation.
We asked 1000 Australians aged 18 years and over the open question:"What would you like to change?" Download results (pdf)
